Back in 1983. I was out of work and flat broke. Not the ideal conditions for somebody wanting to make it as a documentary and street photographer. All I had at the time was an aging YASHICA 6x6 camera and one roll of film. I had to choose a subject that would tell a story in 12 images or less, and I made a decision to photograph, the demolition of St. Nicholas Church, on the corner of Woodgate and Abbey Gate in my home town of Leicester UK.
The shoot went well, on a Sunday afternoon with nobody around, and the light was perfect. Years later these images were published in a local daily newspaper and the negatives themselves are now in my archive at the Bishopsgate Institute in London UK.
I found these old scans recently, and thought they would be worth publishing. Forty two years on, I still love to make images of churches, especially in cities and towns.
